Inequality and Education: The Relationship between Rising Economic Inequality and Educational Attainment and Achievement

This report describes a learning process led by the expert team headed by Professor Noah Lewin-Epstein, which examined relationships between the rise in socioeconomic inequality and inequality in educational opportunities and achievements. The learning process included three workshops for colleagues in the field and a meeting for practitioners, all held in Jerusalem, an additional meeting in Washington, D.C., as well as a seminar in Jerusalem, which was open to the public. The report was written with the assumption that the education system can – and should – reduce the distance between the ideal of equal opportunity and the actual distribution of opportunity, and that through systematic research it is possible to identify barriers and point to methods that make more and better opportunities available to disadvantaged groups in the population and thus, provide the education system with knowledge and tools to improve processes and to work toward reducing societal disparities.
