Arabic instruction in the Israeli Hebrew-language school system

Activity type: Expert Team
Activity coordinator: Guy Ron-Gilboa
Activity period: 2010-2012

Opportunities and risks inherent in the possible change in focus of Arabic instruction in the Israeli Hebrew-language school system: From "Standard Arabic" to "Spoken Arabic": In response to a request by the director of the Ministry of Education's Pedagogic Secretariat, an expert team was established to investigate possible changes in the instruction of Arabic in the Israeli Hebrew-language school system. The expert team was chaired by Prof. Ella Landau-Tasseron of the Hebrew-University.
In consultation with the Ministry of Education, the team chose relevant issues for discussion, and commissioned literature reviews. These formed the basis for a series of Workshops in which researchers from various disciplines, practitioners and other stakeholders participated. These gatherings will serve as the infrastructure for the design of an improved policy for this field.
The expert team published its final report (April, 2012) in Hebrew "Teaching Arabic: Where do we go from here". Executive Summary of the report is also available in English.
